Charles worked very hard and so he enjoyed his leisure time every bit as enthusiastically. The Penny Farthing bicycle might have seemed, to many, an exceptionally frivolous and, potentially, dangerous bit of recreational equipment but something about its unconventional nature appealed to the young man’s sense of adventure.
Flying around the racing track of the Pemberton Sporting Club, the last impediment Charles could have expected would have been the small Yorkshire terrier that scampered into his path.
The header, he was later told by observers, was quite a spectacular and memorable sight and, certainly, the most unique accident ever noted on the track. In all honesty, Charles was hard-pressed to say which was more spectacularly memorable: the accident itself or the flashing green eyes of the dog’s horrified owner who not very much later became his beloved wife of over 50 years.
