Sweet Dreams

Although sometimes it seemed to Buster as if it had been forever since Steve Darling and Maggie Dear had taken him into their home, the reality of the matter was that it had only been one year…exactly one year as of today.

For the spirited young pup, it had been a very good year indeed. Steve Darling was gone much more than Buster might have liked but was never too tired when he returned home for them to play ball or to go exploring the neighborhood around them.

Maggie Dear was always so loving to him; rubbing his belly just right and even making him special treats like the indescribably yummy treat she called a “cupcake” just for his special day.

Animal Warden, David Carstairs, watched the young dog’s breathing slow and, at length, stop and wondered if the animals he was required to put down this way had any sort of dreams before their too-short lives were so unfairly ended.

  3. I really like the "Steve Darling and Maggie Dear" names - which would be what the dog heard. Adds a unique feeling to the post. Good (but sad) story!

  4. Oh this is so sad! i was not prepared for that ending hitting me like that! With the name darling I was reminded of Lady and the Tramp but this is no Disney schmaltzy tale. Just heartrendingly sad. xx
