Lamentable Hindsight

As the senior agent of State Security on this noxious planet, Chief Enforcer Strelx was quite certain an oversight visit from six Council watchdogs regarding his progress on the Janx affair was both unnecessary and unwise.  his progress in capturing/neutralizing the fugitive Janx he was quite certain an oversight visit

On an almost-entirely unrelated yet inextricably-connected note, Strelx would soon enough realize he really should have given more attention to Lady Marissa, the widow of the late and unlamented Felinoid Science Council researcher, Gunther.

Strelx couldn’t have cared less if Janx had been responsible for the death of the officious, trumped-up house pet and had told her as much in only a slightly-less-acidic manner.

At that moment, had he known the server who brushed past him was, in fact, a holographically-disguised Felinoid operative intent on reducing both herself and the Councilors to their component atoms with an exceptionally small but incredibly powerful explosive charge, he might have entirely rethought his position on the matter.

This story was written for the weekly Visual Dare flash fiction prompt: outnumbered. As a personal challenge, I have been stringing the prompts from week to week into an ongoing story. This marks the 30th such and previous installments may be found here.
